For a courtyard in neat and compact layout and with relatively well-preserved original buildings, the design is subject to repair, retaining roof trusses, wall bodies, outer eaves and indoor terrazzo floors of the existing buildings. In order to accomplish the access to the second floor of the north building, a bridge “floating” on the roof of the first floor is thereby designed, and is supported by rebuilding the removed old house on the original site with fair-faced concrete meanwhile retaining the original brick wall shape. In this way, people are allowed to experience the special visual perception of the traditional Beijing-style quadrangle courtyard while walking upstairs to the “bridge” platform.
